GUEST SINGER I COULD NEVER LIVE LIKE YOU

A month ago, we discovered the expansive debut song ‘New Experience’ from Doncaster’s Guest Singer. Enthralled by their existential songwriting, we’ve been keeping tabs of the trio of Jake Cope, Paul Burdett and France Lahma. ‘I Could Never Live Like You’ is the band’s third track, and as with their debut, Guest Singer artfully pulls away the artifice of life to gently confront reality. Here, Cope explains the thought process behind this new song: “Heroes are nothing but unreliable narrators created in our own minds. What we idolise in other people is often what we think is missing within ourselves. When you discover these protagonists of perfection are flawed, cruel, or just boring, the let-down of realisation can empty you out. This song is recognition of that.” The track is mellow and steady, with downbeat percussion, other-worldly synth whines, and reverberated strings. Once again, we notice Cope’s impressive vocal which possesses a genuine clarity and almost passive melancholica. Guest Singer give an honest view of the world, and for that we’re thankful. Be sure to keep an eye out for their I’m Irrelevant Now EP out on March 22nd with shows in Manchester, Hull and Sheffield slated for April. - Hannah Thacker
